Breach of Peace: Portraits of the 1961 Mississippi Freedom Riders was first published in 2008 (Atlas Press). An expanded and updated edition was published in 2018 by Vanderbilt University Press. The book contains the mug shots of all 329 Riders arrested in Jackson in 1961, and my new portraits and short profiles of 99 Riders.
The mugshots and portraits of 20 Riders were included in the exhibition Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956-1968, which originated at the High Museum in Atlanta in 2008, and traveled to the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, the Field Museum in Chicago, the Skirball in Los Angeles and the Bronx Museum of the Arts in New York City.
Alone the portraits and mug shots have also been exhibited at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, the Ft. Wayne Museum of Art, the Jewish Community Center of Washington, DC, among other museums and galleries.
I started out life in New York City as a magazine editor: The NationHarper's7 DaysRolling Stone, among other stops. Then I worked online: Microsoft Sidewalk, Deja.com, and the New York Times (twice).
